I am in a tizz, my knickers twisted.

When I started Lambchops and Butterflies I had so many ideas buzzing around my head about the content I wanted to include. Thing is with a new baby in the house and a toddler who still needs lots of mummy time I cannot manage the expectation I have for my blogs.

But, you see, I love beauty and I love fashion so a decision has been made. Why don't I just merge my blogs together.

So 'She was not at all domestic', will continue to be what it has always been - my day to day diary, my thoughts and my experiences and this will now include my fashion and beauty musings too. In a nutshell - my blog!!!

If you don't subscribe or follow me already over at Shewasnotatalldomestic do pop over and have a look. I promise lots of fashion and beauty posts and will subhead them Lambchops and Butterflies, so you can hone in on these if that's your interest.

Perhaps when things have calmed down lambchops and butterflies will once again become a stand alone blog, but until then its going to make itself at home in the Scruff household....

Dreaming of a caramel coated Autumn

There is a nip in the air. It requires nerves of steel and the patience of a saint.

I have neither.

Yesturday I took her to Brent Cross to buy new shoes. I returned with her first pair of trainers and a new wrinkle for me.

Office Shoes has a brilliant selection of kids trainers. They stock lots of Nike and Adidas in fabulous colour ways as well as a huge collection of Converse. It's the most un-child friendly environment to shop as the blaring music merely hyped an already wired toddler right up to the max. I didn't need to choose which style to go for as Miss P went straight up to the stand, tossed aside a few pairs and homed in on these beauties. She then proceeded to run around the store squealing with delight at her new find. They were £25.99 which seems to be the standard cost of sneakers.

the one trouser leg up completes to the 'fly' girl look

And for mum.....

Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus wrinkle and UV damage Corrector
I'm not usually big on wrinkle products, but after the stresses of the last few months I have gained a few new friends on my forehead so I have been testing this out. Its ace. As instructed I apply three drops to my face, concentrating on my troubled forehead. I only do it at night as mornings are too manic in the Scruff household.

I have been trying it for about three weeks now and I can see a difference. My lines are still there, but the skin looks softer and in better nick.

It contains three whizzy ingredients that repair UV damage (I have lots of this) and encourage your skins natural collagen production so it firms up and puffs wrinkles out.

It hit the shelves TODAY...whoop whoop. Its £35 which seems a lot but actually you need such a small amount each application (think cost per wear) and I reckon it works, this is a bit of a bargain.

Go forth and conquer the wrinkle.

New mum!

Well my head is finally emerging above water.

Phewy what a crazy few weeks.

I gave birth to a big eyed boy on Friday 13th (typical!). Champneys Tring

I decided to head to a spa for a final bit of rest and relaxation before my life would be turned upside down with the arrival of number 2.

Living in North London, Champneys in Tring seemed an obvious choice as its a mere half an hour whip along the M25.

Now those Londoners amongst you will know there's no whipping along the M25. In fact we got stuck in major roadworks and our half an hour turned into two miserable, overheated, anxiety inducing hours. We did try a short cut but got terribly lost. Mr Scruff was extremely irate and branded me the worst map reader ever (er try navigating on country lanes with only a UK main road map for company). I also started to get what I thought were labour pains. It transpired that after a quick petrol station pit stop, they were merely hunger pangs.

So close to boiling point both physically and mentally, we finally arrived at Champneys.

Lunch was a lovely looking buffet. I ignored the guide printed on the crockery which explains how much of each food group one should have for optimum health, and piled my plate with stuffed peppers, fancy salad, butternut squash bake, slices of pesto glazed chicken and some baby new potatoes. It all tasted very delicious and very healthy.

Fed and watered we took a stroll around the grounds. Champneys is a bit of a celeb haunt, and the extremely buff, cocoa buttered and deep voiced Frank Bruno was our celeb spot. Being a hot day, there were bodies sprawled everywhere, and it occured to me that what this place lacked was anything 'outdoors'. Yes there were the loungers, and the juice bar/ cafe had seating on the terrace but a pool would be fabulous. There certainly is the space for it, and it seems we now have the climate.

Instead we headed to the indoor pool. The pool is a 25 meter training pool. There are only four loungers around it, so this is where you come to 'swim lengths' as opposed to have a dip, followed by a magazine fest, but it was deserted and we had a lovely hour long session.

For a more leisurely float there is a jacuzzi, which is semi outdoors and this has loungers plus a sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool. There is a also a small salt water hydrotherapy pool with massage jets, but this has to booked as a treatment with a therapist.

Talking of treatments, I had the Beautiful Bump pregnancy massage. I have to say, the treatment menu wasn't as long as I had hoped and most of the treatments are Champneys own. Mine consisted of a back massage, where I sat and leaned across the bed (again, I was surprised they didn't have a specialised pregnancy table or pillow), a leg and foot massage and then a scalp massage. Some hydrating cream was applied to my bump during the treatment. It was 55minutes long, which I thought was a little short as I did spend some time manouvering around the bed. I enjoyed it though, and I did feel relaxed after.

Meanwhile Mr Scruff was enduring a sports massage. Now he was impressed. Usually he prefers a nice pampering stroke from a young female therapist (mmmm), but due to a few cycling aches he opted for a more practical treatment. He was scared. BUT unlike other sports massages he has had where he has cried with pain, this felt good. The therapist used pressure points and intense rubbing to ease away the knots. A very loose and impressed Mr Scruff emerged.

Dinner was silver service, and thankfully everyone was dressed (as opposed to wearing dressing gowns - a pet peeve of mine at these places). The health benefits and fat contents of each option was labeled, which I did find influenced my decision (I knew I should have gone for the corn fed chicken with spring onion mash, but found myself, munching on yet more crispy designer leaves).

Our room too, was very pleasant. From what I could tell there are the fancier premier suites in the main house complete with four posters and venetian mirrors - all very Laura Ashley. Or there are more contempary rooms in the new wings.

The ambience? Relaxing. Very. I found I could switch off and chill out. However if the weather hadn't been good, I am not sure where there is to lounge...the billiards room? Or piano bar?

I get the impression Champneys is about detox, recouperation, personal fitness as opposed to a feet up pamper session. But we came away with smiles on our faces. We enjoyed our night away. My shoulders felt more relaxed and my temperament eased.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lambchopsandbutterflies.blogspot.com/2010/07/spa-review-champneys-tring.html' title='Spa review! A night of restless sleep thanks to leg cramps and the need to pop to the loo every ten minutes meant that my essential eight hours was somewhat cut short. And it shows.

A brightening mask and a bit of facial massage would soon sort it out but I don't have the time today for such luxuries so I shall cheat.

Pink blush is my secret weapon to pepping up a complexion intent on dragging itself on the floor. It's like a whistle blowing on your skin, a light bulb being switched on. I always opt for a cream texture as it is more akin to the skin and looks more natural and younger than powder, and I am never put off by the brightness of pink in the packaging - in fact the brighter the better.

Using my finger tip I dab a teeny tiny amount onto the fat part of my moisturised cheek. Then using short buffing strokes I blend the colour in so it is seamless. The look you get when you have been for a brisk walk in the fresh air - that's the effect I am after.

A perky pop of pink...better than an expresso!

my HIGH FIVE...

1. Not only does it work wonders on all the bits that have started to ache, helps relieve any water retention, nourishes the skin to keep it elastic, but it is incredibly relaxing. I found myself really sinking into the massage bed and thinking about my baby...and as for him, well he was doing somersaults in my tummy he was so excited by all the fuss my body was getting.

Space NK
The bed is something to behold....it has a giant bowl shape cut into it with two side dishes. My belly and boobs plop in like jelly in a mould. And what a novelty it is laying on my front. It's as if my entire body breathes a huge sigh of relief.

My therapist offers me a smell test to decide which Aromatherapy Associates oil to use. Apparently the one that appeals to you the most is the one your body needs and this can change at every visit. I plump for Rose (but I did cheat a bit and asked her which one is best for stretch marks). I'm in good company as rose is the most popular choice for pregnant ladies. It's extremely nourishing for the skin and has a lovely calming effect...here's hoping.

My back is first to be massaged. I expected it to be a lot more gentle. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. In fact I was pleased as nothing frustrates me more than a therapist who just strokes you up and down. Of course its not deep pressure, but strong enough that I can feel the multitude of knots around my shoulder blades soften. The back is well rubbed for what feels like ages.

I then flip myself around (yeah right, bring out the fork lift truck), so I am laying on my back. Lots of towels are placed under my knees and back so I am nicely propped up. The therapist then massages my legs using long sweeping strokes. She then has a little play with my feet which is just bliss. As she was rubbing and massaging my toes, the other foot would squeal "my turn my turn".

I never really see the point of having my arms massaged, but this has changed my mind. She worked right up and into my shoulders and then pressed all the tingly spots in my hands and fingers. They felt weightless.

Finally she moved up to my head and after lots of hair pulling and scalp massaging, she then massaged my face using lots of small pinching and pressing motions.

How did I feel? Zonked to be honest and a little light headed. I am not quite sure how I managed to get on the tube home. I felt like all the static in my body was going haywire and that night I just passed out in bed. Relaxed? I should say so.

The treatment is either 1 hour, £75, or 11/2 hours, £135 long. To be honest I think the hour treatment is long enough. Its quite an intense massage and 90 minutes could send you into a bit of a spin!

(I visited SpaceNK Hans Crescent, Knightsbridge, bookings Tel: 020 7581 8271
Email: enquires@spa-nk.com)

Decleor Mother to Be
I am a huge fan of Decleor products and treatments. I have never had a bad experience so my expectations are high.

Laying on my left side hugging a pillow, my therapist Claudia, massages my back using the Decleor specially blended pregnancy oil. Her touch is firm but comfortable and she alternates between quick twists and pummels to long strokes. I can feel the tension that I am holding in my legs just sink into the bed. I then turn onto my right so she can work on the other side of my back and neck.

I then lay on my back and Claudia moves the bed so my knees are bent and I am sat up to where I am most comfortable. She then works on my legs and feet (FYI, it is at this point I feel obliged to apologise for my grubby little feet - it is flip flop weather after all, but she is utterly unphased - or incredibly polite). She then moves onto my arms and hands.

Next up, my belly! Firstly she gently massages my tum with the same oil and then she tops this with a lashing of warm balm. She covers my tummy with a plastic sheet and towel.

I am then treated to a facial. Helloooooo! This feels amazing. The Decleor products she uses smell heavenly and I just lay there sighing and relaxing deeper and deeper. As the face mask she applies does its thing, she applies a zingy body moisturiser over my limbs, before removing the masks from my belly and face and finishes off with some moisturiser.

The treatment is an hour and a half but because there is a facial involved, it's the perfect length of time. How did I feel? Well, this, dear readers, is the granddaddy of pregnancy massages. Even if I wasn't pregnant I'd want this - a full body massage, lotions and masks AND a facial...pamper-heaven Ahoy!

(I visited Spa Illuminata, and it cost £135, Mayfair, W1. They are the bane of my life. I hate them.

a small selection of my armoury against stretchmarks...am I deluded...probably!

They first arrived during the final two weeks of my first pregnancy (the buggers) - like a flaming tree blossoming on my belly.

I had used cream and oil everyday - twice a day - throughout my pregnancy. But if I am honest by the time I was pregnant again about a year later they really had started to fade, along with my fretting.

During this pregnancy new marks have appeared month after month. What am I to do? Mope, cry? Sometimes when I look at them I feel like it, but no, what I do is slavishly keep applying the creams. Some I believe are certainly helping. My skin is in good condition and although areas are red and veiny, they don't appear to be too deep (or so my rose tinted glasses tell me).

Despite, it seems, no one else I know getting them, 70% of us mums do. We are more prone if our skin is fair, our own mums got them or if we got them during puberty.

I don't think for a second that any potion or promise on the market will prevent them if you are prone, but they can improve the condition of your skin and make their appearance less severe. It also helps to drink copius amounts of water to keep everything hydrated. I have also been popping Calc Flur. A homeopathic tissue salt that is supposed to help the skin remain elastic.

My top picks are:

1. Decleor Perfect Sculpt stretch mark gel cream combined with Aromessence Sculpt firming body concentrate in the mornings and Aromessence sculpt balm before bed.
When I went for a Decleor Mother To Be treatment, the therapist told me that if I used these products Decleor guarantee no stretch marks. Mmmmm, I won't hold them to that, but this combination smells amazing and the oil and balm contain 100% high quality essential oils like frankincense, rose, camomile and grapefruit. Massage the oil or balm over your tummy and then top with the cream It does take AGES to sink in so give yourself time before getting dressed. My skin feels really nourished and yes perhaps a bit of me is holding onto their word.

2. Strivectin SD
This became a cult hit when it was discovered the stretch mark formula worked on fading wrinkles too and as a result they promote it more as a anti-aging product, but lets not forget its original purpose. This week sees the launch of the newly updated formulation. The magic mix is Striadril, a blend of 18 ingredients all working to boost collagen and skin elasticity. Because of the strong concentration of ingredients use a little massaged in small circles. (please note: when I asked Strivectin if the cream is safe to use during pregnancy, they said they had not tested this so could not give me an answer. Please check with your doctor first)

3. Silderm
Brand new the UK. Its being endorsed by Danielle Lloyd who started using it on holiday in America, when it was recommended by her US chums (but don't let that put you off...apparently according to twitter, she's not the most popular beauty icon! BUT I have been testing it and think its good). It has been proven to reduce the appearance of existing stretch marks by 70% - thats alot. The key ingredient is gotu kola, which stimulates the production of collagen which keeps the skin elastic. It also contains Vitamin E. It feels really oily to apply and has a very strong lavender scent. Like many of the oils I have used it takes ages to blend into the skin, so I tend to put it on and then have my breakfast etc before getting dressed. It has a richness that makes me think its really nourishing my skin.

4. Vergeturyl creme by Method Jeanne Piaubert.
A hot spa brand which is huge in its native France. As well as working on strengthening the skin to prevent stretch marks, this also works on the pigmentation of existing scars so they appear less obvious. I used this after my first pregnancy and I really think it helped fade my scars.

Others I rate!

Tonic body treatment oil topped with Sretch mark control cream, by Clarins. The beauty industry swear by this combination

Pregnancy Body Oil, by Weleda. Recommended by a fellow Beauty Editor, this is an affordable body treat.

Bio Oil - this is a favourite amongst so many women, but for me, I just don't like the scent. Its like perming lotion.

Murad Firm and Tone serum. Pricey yes, but I used this post pregnancy and I really think it made a difference.

If all else fails, I am learning to embrace these markings as a sign of being a mum, and after all, one piece swim suits are all the rage in fashion circles!

Cybermummy fashion: the maxi dress

To those who don't know, Cybermummy is a conference where a bunch of us mummy bloggers will get together to talk blogging, business and babies. But best of all it's a chance for us who have met through the virtual world to meet face to face. EEEEEEK. What the F*&K do I wear (excuse my language but seriously - this is panic stations).

Judging by the twittering going on, I'm not the only one already thinking outfits. There is much discussion on the maxi dress. I'll be honest they are not usually my style, but it does tick a lot of the right boxes.

To get the best out of a maxi, I say avoid anything with a tropical print, or you may end up looking like you should be heading to the beach with a hibiscus in your hair and a Sex on the Beach in your hand. Likewise anything with beading or in delicate fabrics such a chiffon and it's the church aisle you should be heading for.

Either go for a cool, jersey fabric and belt it up for a Kate Moss easy going effect - very festival fabulous. Or pick a ditsy print for a more sophisticated, 50's inspired look.

I've spotted these on the High Street:

Uniqlo, £24.99. I LOVE this. Its so easy and effortless. You can sling a belt round your hips, or nip in your waist, accessorise with a statement necklace and strappy flat sandals. Et Voila!

Jigsaw, £145. The homeware quite frankly is to die for. In fact I could quite easily shut up fairy cottage and move into their Regent Street store. Mr Scruff is a huge fan too. For years now he has pretty much balls up any present buying for me (a pair of walking boots may be practical but not what a girl wants to rip open on her 30th), but now all he has to do is buy anything from the store and present me with the Anthropolgie paper bag and I am squealing with delight.

But what is better still is that they have a sale room...yes a room just for stuff that's reduced. Hear my glee! Not shoddy bits of crap that no one else wants, but lovely quality pieces that make you want to twirl and giggle. And they are available on line too!

An addition to my maternity wardrobe, is this number. Now the birth is getting closer my focus is switching to tops - breastfeeding! It's no good trying to hoist a dress up in public when the milk monster wants mummy's boobie (a lesson I learned with Little Miss P). Its tops all the way.

It's a bit hippy - perfect for summer days in the park (oh how my bubble will be burst!) but can also be styled up tucked into smart jeans.

I also bought these to put on the wardrobe doors of the new nursery

Whilst browsing the store I came across a few more delights that has encouraged me to bypass topshop and H&M and save up....

Brilliant cream for dry baby (and mums) skin!

Little Miss P has never had baby soft skin. For the first six months she had very bad eczema, and whilst that is now under control, she does still get the occasional flare up around her joints. As for the rest of her skin, it has always been dry. If I run my hands across her legs and arms, it doesn't feel peachy, but rough. I have tried all sorts of creams, from liquid parrafin creams prescribed by the doctor to organic oils and balms, yet nothing makes a long lasting difference.

That is until now. All-Purpose High-Elevation Dry Skin Relief (about £20) by Origins was recommended to me by a fellow beauty ed. She raved at how amazing it was on her little boys skin. I had to try it for myself. Chatting to the PR, she said she gets loads of feed back on how good this is for eczema and dry skin. It is packed full of shea butter, renowned for its moisturising properties as well as sunflower, safflower, sesame and jojobo oils. To top up the cocktail is wheat bran extract which seals the moisture into the skin.

It has an incredibly light texture and is super speedy to blend into Little Miss P's skin plus it smells lovely and fresh - not a bit perfumed or heavy. But most important are the results. I have seen a vast improvement in the texture of her skin. It feels instantly smoother. Yes it is pricey, but I don't plan to smother her in this every day. A little goes a long way so this will be a night time treat just on her dry areas. Plus any left over I massage into my scaly hands (an occupational mummy hazard) to make them feel lovely jubley.

Ahhhhhhhh, that's better!

The sun has got his hat on!

Cor it's a scorcher!

Was I the only person who got her knickers in a twist over yesturdays heat wave?

A two hour drive up to to Peterborough to visit Mr Scruffs family does tend to send one into a frazzle. His sister has a south facing garden with no shade, plus the conservatory was like a greenhouse. Phew! Little Miss P and I didn't know what to do with ourselves. Both of us had teary moments when it all got too much. Hot and bothered!

Now I love frolicking outside but I am paranoid about the sun. I grew up holidaying in Hungary and Greece and have the freckles, moles and pigmentation to prove it. If I got burnt (and I do remember some serious shoulder blistering), my mum would put a T shirt on me and send me back out. Bless the good old 70's!

I've picked up a few tips on staying safe in the sun!

- I apply a good layer of sun screen as if it were body lotion in the morning, no matter what my plans are. That way I'm protected for any incidental exposure, such as popping out to hang up the washing!

- Be SPF savvy. The SPF doesn't represent the strength of a sunscreen, but how long it will protect you in the sun. So an SPF 20 means you can stay in the sun 20 times longer than your skin can naturally defend itself for.

- In order to get the correct SPF level, you need to apply the right amount. If you apply too thinly it lowers the protection level. On Little Miss P I need to see a visible layer of cream all over her skin. On me, the correct dosage is 30 ml per application (that's about six teaspoons). And I re apply about every hour.

- Make sure it protects against UVA as well as UVB rays. UVB are the rays that cause surface burning, but UVA's cause invisible and long term damage. They can penetrate clouds and glass.

- We stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. The stronger the sun, doesn't mean the deeper the tan...it just means the hotter I will be and the more likely I am to burn.

- A little bit of what you fancy does you good. I love being outside and the sun is the best way for us to absorb Vitamin D.

But which sun screen to use?

I've talked about it before, but I love La Roche Posay Anthelios Xl Spf 50+ Fluid Extreme For Face. It protects against pigmentation and feels really light to apply - not a hint of the sticky sunscreen feeling.
On my body I love Dermalogica Multivitamin Bodyblock SPF 20. This feels like a body lotion it's so luxurious! And Liz Earle Mineral Sun Cream is mineral based (naturally derived), which reflects the sun away from the skin. For a budget option, I like Nivea and Ambre Solaire. You do get the slightly sticky feeling, but I trust their expertise.

On Little Miss P I love Green People Organic Children No Scent SPF 25. It is really creamy and is brilliant on her sensitive and eczema-prone skin. I have also tried Nivea Baby SPF 50 which can be used on babes as young as 3 months. It's really runny and doesn't blend in well, but hey it works! I'll use this on super hot days when I will reapply all the time. Sainsbury's are doing 50% off all Nivea sun screen at the moment!

I've also been out this morning and bought Miss P a sun suit. I never thought I would get one as we have no plans to travel abroad, but blimey, if this weather continues I need to think tropical!

I shopped around - Mothercare, Next, John Lewis, Babies R US, Boots - all have a good selection between £10 and £20, but I found the styles either too girly (ever thrifty, I want to be able to pass this down to the boyo), or the arms and legs too short. I plumped for good old M&S. A snip at £14. It comes with trousers, top and a hat! The girls version is Little Miss Sunshine which really did tempt me!

It may not be the Caribbean, but the there's still fun to be had!

Now all we need is a paddling pool, a bucket and spade and a couple of pina coladas. HELLLLLLOOOOOOO SUMMER!

The dangers of 'Black Henna' Tattoos.

Following on from my meeting last week with the CTPA (a quick recap: they are the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association. An independent group of toxicologists and scientists who work with - but not for - the cosmetic industry), where we discussed the safety of products for our kids.

With the holiday season fast approaching, I wanted to fill you in on the dangers of temporary henna tattoos. I'm not talking about the beautiful light brown henna tattoos used in Indian culture, but the black henna that you often see around holiday resorts, markets and at festivals. The kind your kids want. I mean what harm can they do? Basically if it is black or dark, it's illegal.

Henna extract is an orangy-red shade, not black. This is not henna but a mix of PPD (paraphenylene diamine), which is banned for direct use on the skin as it is very harmful. PPD is often found in hair dye and for this use it is safe, but when it is applied directly to the skin it can trigger a harmful allergic reaction called 'contact dermatitis'. The area can flare up and leave a swollen, red and sore rash. (there's some pretty yucky pics if you do a google search!)

Black henna can also cause long term damage as it makes the skin more susceptible to reactions when you use safe products containing PPD. I.e. you may not be able to dye your hair again.

If you want to know more about this check out www.thefactsabout.co.uk

Maternity swimwear!

I have the week off work...WHOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO! We are not planning to go abroad but we have booked a night away at a lovely hotel by the sea (Chewton Glen - I will write all about it when I get back).

I am not holding out on swimming in the sea, but there is a fantastic pool. Now, let me tell you a little something about me - I am obsessed with swimming. Love it. When I was pregnant with Little Miss P I swam three times a week. I don't go for it. It's more a leisurely twenty five minutes gentle front crawl. It makes me feel weightless - a real treat when carrying such a bump!

Pregnant with Miss P I showed off a lovely smooth round egg shaped belly, so I flaunted it in my usual collection of bikinis. But then the stretch marks arrived so this time my tummy has been well hidden.

I have been wearing a swimming costume in a size bigger than usual but it is giving me a bit of a camels hoof as it stretches over the belly!!! This weeks mission has been maternity swimwear!

Here's my pick....

Topshop, £30

Mothercare, £24

Mamas and papas, £25

Maman Jojo Bebe, £24

Blooming Marvellous, £30

Dorothy Perkins, £14

Figleaves, £35

I went for the Dorothy Perkins tankini top but in plain black. It can be teamed with all my usual non maternity bikini bottoms. I went for the cheapest option, considering I'll only wear it for another two months! It looks nice and fits well over the bump with room for a bit more growth and it is still sexy around the bust area...pass me my towel, I'm ready for a dip!

the safety of products for our babies

I don't know about you but I get so bogged down by all the conflicting advice about what I can and can't use on my babies skin. It's a real head scratcher.

This week I went to a meeting with the CTPA (that's the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, an independent group that works closely with dermatologists, scientists and the beauty industry. They do not aim to defend the cosmetic industry but provide the facts). We talked about the safety of ingredients, but most interesting for the subject of myth busting for mothers.

Being a huge fan of natural products I was keen for proof that surely it's better to use a natural, organic product over a standard off the shelf baby product?
'No, not really,' was their response. 'Oh' was mine. Why? Choosing an organic product is a personal choice, rather than a safety one. There are extremely strict European laws to control what goes into our baby products. They are put under rigorous tests - especially those aimed at under 3's (when skin is still vulnurable). There are very rigid standards to ensure ingredients are assessed for their suitability. Anything likely to cause sensitivity is highly unlikely to be included.

When formulating these baby products the ph balance of a babies skin is considered. Skin is a bit more acidic up until the age of 3, so this is taken into consideration in the lab and ingredients can be added in the correct dose to ensure skin is not compromised.

So, let me get this straight, in some cases a man made product is actually better for babies? Surely olive oil, which I, along with all the mums in our baby massage class used is best?
Well, no not really. Apparently a leading dermatologist (I need to dig a bit deeper on this to get the paper/ lecture notes he gave), has actually proved that olive oil is bad for babies skin, especially those prone to eczema. It contains a fatty acid called Oleic acid which sticks to dry skin and this raises the ph balance so its natural barrier becomes less effective which can result in skin thinning and becoming compromised. Blimey.

Babies skin is actually really robust and has a really good natural barrier, however they did advice not to put anything on the skin for the first three weeks - only water.

So what have I taken away from this? Little Miss P has ezcema. She has had it since birth. She has been prescribed Cetraban to use as a body moisturiser, Oilatum bath emolliant and Hydrocortisone steroid cream for when she has very bad flare ups. As a journalist I like to keep an open mind about everything and am always looking for the facts, but as a mother all rational seems to have gone out the window. I have struggled constantly with the idea of using these creams on my little girls skin. I have been on a pursuit to find an organic, natural product that will help treat her. Why? The hospital she is under care only for her well being.

I feel happier. I realise that by treating her condition I am not doing her any harm. These products are to help and as long as I follow the application advice I have nothing to worry about. I am going to continue to choose products that contain more natural ingredients because that's what I prefer to use, but I will stick strictly to their use by dates and when Little Miss P has flares ups I will reach confidently for the prescribed potions.

I hope you found this useful. I am going to post too about other things we discussed such as the dangers of henna tattoos for kids on holiday, what you can and can't use in pregnancy, how to look after babies skin in the sun and how to deal with teenagers beauty woes.

If you want to read up some more check out the website www.thefactsabout.co.uk

My beauty pearls of wisdom (fnar fnar)

The lovely Heather over at Young and Younger has tagged me onto a post. It honours Martha Stewart as the queen of all things domestic (and I thought I held that crown, snort!) The idea is to offer some pearls of wisdom of our own. These tips have stood up for me very well over the years, so here is my two pence worth.

1. Body brush. Forget your expensive firming lotions and potions, a daily sweep is the best way to help keep cellulite under control. Every morning pre-shower use a natural bristle brush (you can find these in all department stores and good chemists. Mine is by Elemis), to sweep up your legs and thighs, along your arms and around your tummy. Always move towards your heart and there's no need to rub raw. The aim is to stimulate your circulation to get the blood pumping, which in turn helps flush away clogged toxins. I am not saying I am cellulite free (laughs out loud!) but I firmly believe my wobble is better thanks to my daily sweep.

2. My hair has a natural frizz to it so static is a concern. A Bounce laundry sheet just feathered over my lengths will calm the 'electric shock' look to my bouffant. Another tip is......

3. Invest in a silk pillow case. It not only helps control static in your hair but it prevents crepey skin. You know when you sleep on your side and when you wake up the side of your face and between your bust is all wrinkly. Well laying on a silk pillow case provides a smoother slippery surface so skin spreads itself out. Plus it feels ever so Jackie Collins and heck, it's a lot cheaper than botox.

4. A muslin cloth. Fans of Liz Earle's Cleanse and Polish don't need me to preach to them about this one. But whatever face wash you use, rinse your face using a warm muslin cloth. It acts as a really gently exfoliant providing the perfect surface to absorb your moisturiser resulting in a brighter complexion.

5. I'm a huge fan of backcombing and give my roots a quick bit of oomph everyday. Spray your hair brush with hair spray, rather than the actual hair. You get a more natural finish rather than a Mrs Jetson pouf.

6. Prolong the life of your clogged up nail polish by adding one or two drops of nail polish remover to the bottle. Give it a good shake and hopefully it will loosen the dried up paint to give you a few more manicure sessions.

7. Having a bare leg moment? Just rub a tiny bit of hair serum along the lengths of your shins. It creates a light reflective shine which makes legs look slimmer...whooo hooo. You could invest in a body shimmer...or crumble an old eyeshadow that has a bit of sparkle to it (obviously in a nude/ gold/ bronze shade) into some body lotion. You can dot some along your shoulders and collar bone too. Oo la la.

8. Keep a tube of hand cream by your washing up liquid and apply a load on your hands before slipping on your marigolds. The heat of the hot washing up water will actually provide a bit of a skin treat. Who'd of thought washing up could actually be a good thing for your hands!

9. Pink blush. If you look like death a tiny dot of pink blush blended into your cheeks will bring your face alive. Opt for a cream texture over a powder as it looks more natural - like you look when you have been for a brisk stroll in the park.

10. Sunflower oil mixed with some sugar and a spoonful of honey. The best body scrub ever.

Beauty at bed time. Do I have to?

A note: This post feels a bit frivolous considering the importance of today. I for one am feeling incredibly anxious about the election outcome and what it will mean for us over the next five years. But, this blog isn't a political corner, it's an escape. A little bit of fun on a nail biting day.

Yes is the simple answer to that one.

Pre baby, I had OCD when it came to my night time routine. I'd cleanse, tone and moisturise religiously every night. I'd even slather on some serum and heck throw on a hair mask too. And let's not forget hand cream. And on bath nights? Well don't even get me started...we are talking face masks, scrubs, oils. The works.

Post baby. Pah! I am lucky if a wipe touches my skin. Well, I haven't worn any make up today, I tell myself. I've not been anywhere dirty. I don't need to wash. mmmm. The thing is I do, and I notice the difference in my skin when I don't.

So here's the promise I have made to myself. Keep it simple. No faffing. Just a minute a night to make my skin look and feel better.

1. Cleanse. I'm not a fan of wipes. They are great when I am late or tipsy (as if) as it shifts the mascara, as my head is already hitting the pillow. But for everyday they don't do enough to help my skin. As much as I love the refreshing feeling of a face wash, at night it seems too much like hard work. A cream cleanser it is then. A quick swipe all over my skin with a soaked cotton wool ball and I'm done.

I love: Gentle cleanser by Caudalie. This contains the ranges famous grape seed extract which feels incredibly fresh. Pure Cream Cleanser by Origins. Can be washed or tissued off to suit any whim. Cleansing milk by La Roche Posay. An insider favourite.

2. Toner. Really? Using a toner is one of those "I can't be arsed" moments, but actually when I wipe it across my face it sighs with glee, especially if I use a flower scented water.

I love: Wild Rose facial toner by Weleda. Just smell it and you'll be hooked. Neals Yard Remedies Rose Water. Incredibly refreshing. Pop a spray nozzle on it for a summer spritzer.

3. Oil. Oil? Yes, oil. I'm a massive fan of face oils. It's a common concern that oils make skin greasy. On the contrary, they are actually more akin to the skins natural make up, so they literally feed it with goodness and nourishment. The downside is they need to be top notch quality - you get what you pay for. They can also leave a shine and slippery surface for makeup, which is why I use them at night. A couple of drops massaged into my face for about thirty seconds et voila!

I love: Aromessence Rose D'Orient by Decleor. This has rescued my crazy over sensitive pregnancy skin. I place one drop on each of my three middle fingers and then pat over my face. Rosehip Oil by Trilogy. This is good for scars too, and stretch marks! Ole Henriksen Blackcurrant complexion oil. This is a hit with beauty insiders. A hangover must have. Honestly a few drops of this inhaled and then massaged in gets rid of 'sin skin'.

4. bed

I'd love to know what products and tips you swear by so please do share them with me!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://lambchopsandbutterflies.blogspot.com/2010/05/beauty-at-bed-time-do-i-have-to.html' title='Beauty at bed time. I've been testing stretch marks creams on my ever increasing belly and eczema lotions of Little Miss P's rashes. I have been on a pregnancy swim suit mission and am still on the look out for the perfect pair of kids summer sandals

To ease me in, I want to share a couple of brilliant buys I have found this week. I know there is no sun, but you have to plan ahead!

I've never been a huge fan of Next - it always looks a bit try hard for me - trying to be quirky but getting it slightly wrong ( a too garish shade or a patchwork too many) but this season it is rocking my boat. There are some great little buys in there - stuff that looks really individual. I am head over heels in love with the play suit and it looks way better on...but be quick, it's sold out in my local Next but it's still on the website!

Fairy dress, £11 by Next: I'm thinking this will work well for autumn too with dark tights and a long sleeve T underneath! It's really full and comfy. Little Miss P even flashed me her knickers it's so poofy!

Full flowery dress, £18 by Target for Liberty of London. I wish I had bought more of the range and am heading back next week to see if there is anything left. Oh my, it's AMAZING - and cheap! Target have done a little girls clothes range plus adult range PLUS there is brilliant household stuff too. I got the pastel flowery tray (£20) but was so tempted by the plates, cups, picture frames, watering can, wellies, even the bike!

Jazzy jumpsuit, £11 by Next. What can I say. I heart you

Top/dress £7.99 by H&M: as modeled by Little Miss P in her new fluffy slippers (£3 by M&S). With her passion for mopping and sweeping, all she is missing is a couple of rollers in her hair!

Baggy trousers, £10 by Next: I'm paranoid about the sun and these are going to be great when it gets really hot because they are loose and cool but cover up.

'Check out my fabulous new shades!' (£4 by Next)

And not forgetting me! I work next door to Primark on Oxford Street. It is HELL. In the couple of years it has been opened I have ventured in once, lasted all but thirty seconds and then ran out as fast as I could. But look what caught my eye in the window. I never wear heels but have fancied a pair of espidrilles for a while now - if Alexa Chung can rock them, so can I. And for £4, so what if they are a one hit wonder. I'm chuffed!
